Travelling to South Crete
South Crete Triopetra area

Crete is a perfect destination for those who love to travel by camper. With its pristine beaches, scenic roads and the possibility of free stopovers in many places, it is an island that offers a unique and authentic travel experience.

If you dream of an unconstrained road trip, Crete is the ideal place. Here we will explore the best places to visit by camper , practical advice for getting around the island and everything you need to know to organize an unforgettable trip.

Why is Crete the Perfect Destination for a Camper Trip?

1. Freedom of Parking and Ideal Climate

Crete is one of the few islands in the Mediterranean where it is still possible to practice free parking without particular restrictions . This means that we can stop in panoramic places and wake up in front of the sea without having to book campsites or equipped areas.

Furthermore, the mild climate all year round makes Crete a perfect destination not only for summer, but also for autumn, spring and even winter.

2. Diversified Landscapes and Scenic Roads

Crete is an island with a thousand facets:

  • Imposing mountains and spectacular gorges in the central and western part.

  • Long golden sandy beaches and hidden coves along the south and east coast.

  • Traditional villages and archaeological sites that tell the thousand-year history of the island.

3. Affordable Cost of Living

Travelling by campervan in Crete is cheaper than in other European destinations . Fuel, food and services are all reasonably priced and long-term parking, for example at Heraklion Airport, is very convenient.

Camper Itinerary in Crete: The Best Stops

Here is a complete itinerary for a camper trip that covers both the south coast , less touristy and more authentic, and the east coast , with heavenly beaches and hidden corners.

1. Paleochora: The Gateway to the South Coast

Paleochora is the perfect place to start our campervan trip along the south coast. This fishing village has retained its authentic charm, offering a mix of pristine beaches, traditional tavernas and spectacular sunsets .

What to do in Paleochora?

  • Pachia Ammos Beach : long and golden, perfect for relaxing.

  • Gialiskari Beach : more isolated and wild, surrounded by rocky hills.

  • Walk in the old town : among the streets we find small shops and restaurants with typical Cretan cuisine.

Where to park your camper?

In Paleochora there are several rest areas near the sea, perfect for enjoying the view and relaxing.

2. Sougia: Wild Nature and Relaxation

Continuing east, we arrive at Sougia , a little corner of paradise with a pebble beach and turquoise waters .

Recommended experiences in Sougia

  • Trekking in the Agia Irini Gorge : a spectacular route between rock walls and Mediterranean vegetation.

  • Dinner at a local taverna : Sougia is famous for its fresh fish dishes.

3. Matala: History, Sea and Hippie Atmosphere

Matala is one of the most iconic locations in Crete. In the 60s and 70s, it was the refuge of hippies, who lived in caves dug into the rock .

What to do in Matala?

  • Explore the famous caves and discover their history.

  • Relax on the golden beach , perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

  • Witness a breathtaking sunset over the Libyan Sea .

Where to park your camper?

In the surroundings of Matala there are perfect areas for a stop, with a view of the sea.

4. Triopetra Beach: The Three Rocks Beach on the South Coast of Crete

Triopetra Beach is one of the most fascinating beaches on the south coast of Crete, located in the Rethymno region, between Agia Galini and Plakias . Its name, meaning "Three Rocks" , comes from the three imposing rock formations that emerge from the sea near the shore, creating a spectacular and unique scenery.

This beach is a true paradise for those who love uncontaminated natural landscapes, crystal clear sea and tranquility , far from the crowds of the most touristic locations. It is also a perfect destination for those traveling in campers, thanks to the large spaces and the possibility of making a free stop in a breathtaking natural environment.

A Unique and Wild Landscape

Triopetra Beach stands out for its wild beauty and relaxed atmosphere. The beach is divided into two main parts :

  • Northern Triopetra (Little Triopetra) : more intimate and secluded, with a sheltered bay where the waves are generally calmer.

  • Southern Triopetra (Great Triopetra) : a long stretch of golden sand stretching for several kilometres, perfect for walks on the shore and spectacular sunsets.

The three large rock formations that give the beach its name emerge from the sea like natural sculptures, creating a fascinating contrast with the intense blue of the water.

A Crystal Clear Sea Ideal for Swimming and Snorkeling

The waters of Triopetra are incredibly clear , perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The seabed around the rocks is full of marine life, making this beach ideal for lovers of underwater exploration.

The beach is often windy, which makes it a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts.

Unforgettable Sunset

One of the main reasons why Triopetra is so loved is its breathtaking sunset . The sun slowly sinks into the sea, painting the sky with shades of gold, red and purple. The three rocks create a play of shadows and lights that make the landscape even more suggestive.

If we travel by camper, we can park in a panoramic spot and enjoy this spectacular view directly from our home on wheels.

How to Get to Triopetra Beach by Camper

Triopetra is located about 50 km south of Rethymno and access is quite easy.

  • From Rethymno : we follow the road to Spili and then turn towards Akoumia.

  • From Plakias : we can follow the scenic coastal road, a little longer but with incredible views.

The road is paved and easily passable even with a medium-sized camper. However, in the last few kilometers there are some sharp bends, so it is better to proceed with caution.

Where to Park Your Camper in Triopetra

One of the great advantages of Triopetra is that it offers large areas where you can stop freely with your camper .

  • Parking near the beach : There are several open spaces along the dirt road that leads to the beach. From here we can reach the sea in a few minutes.

  • Panoramic stops : there are slightly raised points from which you can admire the sunset in complete tranquility.

  • More sheltered areas : If we want some protection from the wind, we can move inland and park near the hills.

Being a very large beach, there are no crowding problems , even in high season.

Visit Agios Pavlos Beach

A few kilometers from Triopetra we find Agios Pavlos Beach , another natural wonder. Here, the golden sand dunes and the cliffs shaped by the wind create a surreal landscape. It is perfect for those looking for an even more isolated and wild corner.

Exploring Preveli Monastery

If we want to combine the sea with culture, we can visit the Monastery of Preveli , which is about 30 minutes away. This historic monastery, located on a hill with a breathtaking view, played an important role in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War.

5. Xerokampos: The Secret Corner of the East Coast

Xerokampos is one of the most remote and unspoiled places in Crete . Here we find white sandy beaches and crystal clear sea , with very few tourists.

What to do in Xerokampos?

  • Snorkeling in the clear waters.

  • Visit the Minoan ruins in the area.

Where to park your camper?

There are several isolated areas where you can stop for the night, enjoying absolute tranquility.

6. Vai Beach: A Tropical Paradise in Greece

Vai Beach is famous for the largest natural palm forest in Europe . The landscape is spectacular: palm trees, golden sand and a turquoise sea reminiscent of the Caribbean.

Where to park your camper?

There are several rest areas near Vai beach (always use the Park 4 night app to also check reviews from international campers).

Long Term Parking: Heraklion Airport

If we want to leave our camper in Crete for a period and return at a later time , Heraklion airport offers long-term parking options at very convenient prices . You can leave your camper in the dedicated area by entering at the end on the right where the area is wider, however we did not notice any shaded places, but only open-air parking . Monthly prices start after the first week, so be careful to do your calculations well because if you were to use the parking for 1 month and 10 days you will still pay for 2 months (price year 2025 €60/month ).

Practical Tips for a Camper Trip to Crete

Roads and Driving

  • Be careful on mountain roads : it is better to travel with a compact camper.

  • Goats and sheep can cross the road suddenly .

  • Filling up in built-up areas : In remote areas, petrol stations are rare.

Where to Stop for Free?

  • The best areas for touring in a camper in Crete even in tourist periods can be the south coast and the east coast.

  • Avoid areas near archaeological sites .

  • We always respect the environment : we do not leave waste and we reduce our impact to a minimum. In Crete you will find green bins where you can throw undifferentiated waste, while the Blue bins are dedicated to the separate collection of Plastic, Paper and Glass (please remember we always talk about clean materials).

While we are on the subject, we invite you, wherever you are in the world, to actively participate in the "Un Sacco Pulito" project, which we have joined from the beginning, proud to be part of a Community dedicated to actively contributing to the protection of natural environments!
